Missing Murcia man found dead in Alicante reservoir
Search teams located the 47-year-old in La Pedrera reservoir after extensive operation across two provinces
The body of a man who went missing in Murcia has been found in a reservoir in Alicante following a large-scale search operation.
The Guardia Civil confirmed that the body of the 47-year-old, who disappeared on Saturday March 15 in the town of Fortuna, was discovered on Friday in the La Pedrera reservoir, located in the Alicante municipality of Jacarilla.
Officers explained that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is ongoing. However, they pointed out that, pending the results of the post-mortem, initial findings “do not point to a violent death or the involvement of third parties”.
The man, a Spanish national, was last seen near the Tagus-Segura water transfer canal as it passes through Fortuna. His identity has since been confirmed by a family member.
Since the alarm was raised, search teams had been working across both Murcia and Alicante, focusing on areas along the water transfer route. This included checks of tunnels, aqueducts and open stretches of water as efforts intensified over several days.
Support also came from the Alicante Provincial Fire Consortium and the Segura River Basin Authority, which reduced water flow in parts of the system to help crews carry out their work more effectively.
The breakthrough came on Friday morning when a Guardia Civil drone detected the body in a drainage channel leading into the La Pedrera reservoir, within the Jacarilla area.
Specialist divers from the Guardia Civil’s underwater unit, known as GEAS, worked alongside firefighters to recover the body from the water.
Investigators are now awaiting the results of the post-mortem examination to confirm the exact cause of death.
