La Vega Baja set for trail upgrades with new Provincial Council funding
Seven municipalities to benefit from grants boosting paths, natural spaces, and local equipment
Nature lovers in La Vega Baja and beyond have reason to smile, as the Alicante Provincial Council steps up efforts to enhance the region’s outdoor spaces. Thanks to fresh funding, a total of 60 municipalities across the province will see improvements to trails and natural areas, with seven Vega Baja towns: Algorfa, Benijófar, Callosa de Segura, Granja de Rocamora, Los Montesinos, Orihuela, and Redován, among the beneficiaries.
The council is distributing 325,000 euros in two key rounds of subsidy. The largest tranche, €225,000, is split into two parts: one to help councils formally approve their trails, and another specifically aimed at maintenance and upgrading works. It’s this second stream that will directly support trail improvements in the seven Vega Baja towns.
In addition, the council is backing similar projects in other areas, including popular spots in Alicante, Vinalopó, Marina Alta, Marina Baixa, and L'Alcoià and El Comtat, showing a broad commitment to maintaining the region’s walking networks and natural heritage.
Further to these grants, €100,000 is earmarked for conserving and enhancing natural areas not only in Vega Baja but also in towns like Alcoi, Ibi, Novelda, and Xixona. This funding will help preserve the ecosystems and beauty spots that residents and visitors cherish.
Highlighting its commitment to supporting smaller communities, the Provincial Council has also introduced funding for the purchase of pruning shredders, essential tools for maintaining green spaces. Twenty municipalities with fewer than 1,000 inhabitants, including several in La Vega Baja and the wider province, will share a €50,000 budget to purchase this equipment.
Magdalena Martínez, deputy responsible for the area, emphasised that sustainability and environmental care are vital for the future of these towns. “We work alongside our municipalities to implement actions that might otherwise be impossible due to lack of funds,” she said.
For those who enjoy hiking or simply taking a peaceful stroll among nature, these efforts promise better-maintained, safer, and more inviting trails across La Vega Baja and beyond. It's a win for both residents and the many visitors drawn to this beautiful corner of Alicante province.
