Guardamar del Segura restricts fireworks during Moors and Christians festival to avoid scaring dogs

As a result of the new Animal Welfare Law in Spain, the Vega Baja town has instituted a ban of pyrotechnics during the Moros y Cristianos fiesta this weekend

The town of Guardamar del Segura in Alicante imposed a total restriction on the use of pyrotechnics during the main Moors and Christians parades this past weekend, in line with new animal welfare legislation.

The Christian Entrance parade took place on Saturday July 26 and the Moorish Entrance on Sunday 27, both starting at 8pm, half an hour earlier than in previous years. The change was decided by the Junta Central de Moros y Cristianos to ensure the events did not run as late into the night.

In an official statement issued prior to the festivities, the Department of Fiestas, headed by María Venerdi, confirmed that pyrotechnics would not be permitted during the general parades.

The decision was based on the provisions of Law 7/2023 of March 28 on the protection of the rights and welfare of animals. The law aims to reduce the harmful effects of loud noises, which can cause significant stress, fear and anxiety in pets and urban wildlife.

Local animal welfare group Animalia Protección Animal praised the move, calling it a “brave” step towards more respectful and inclusive celebrations. The association also highlighted that excessive noise not only impacts animals, but can also be distressing for people with autism or other neurodivergent conditions.
