ARCHIVED - Forest fire in Caravaca de la Cruz extinguished
The fire in Cerro Gordo in Caravaca de la Cruz which broke out on Thursday afternoon was declared "officially extinguished" at 10:00 on Friday morning.
60 people and 1 helicopter remain in the area damping down.
No casualties or injuries were reported.
It is believed that lightning could be the cause of the first major forest fire of the summer which broke out shortly after lunchtime on Thursday in Caravaca de la Cruz in a forested area known as the Cerro Gordo.
Los aviones anfibios del Ministerio procedentes de #Requena ya se encuentran trabajando en la zona.

Prior to this fire, another nearby in la Serrata, within the pedanía of Caneja had been extinguished, although this was in an area of scrub rather than forest and was extinguished rapidly.
Dry undergrowth caused the fire to spread rapidly and there were two fronts, one smaller than the other, but worrying close to a residential area in the Sierra del Gavilán.
6 Forestry Brigades, 3 helicopters complete with 3 Airborne Brigades from their bases in Alcantarilla, the Sierra de La Pila and Zarcilla de Ramos, regional fire services, police and Civil protection hurried to the scene, joined not long afterwards by 2 helicopters from neighbouring Albacete.
By 17:30 there were nine aircraft working in the area, boosted by the arrival of amphibian planes from the national Government and a co-ordination plane supplied by the Castilla la Mancha government.
