Driver in fatal Los Alcazares accident: The lighting was poor
The driver of the car that killed a British tourist in Los Narejos says he was not speeding and he did have a licence, but the visibility was poor
The man who was driving the car that ran over a British couple in Los Narejos last week, killing one of them, has appeared before a judge in San Javier magistrate’s court to claim that there was a lack of lighting in the area at the time.
The incident took place on Tuesday July 9 outside the Costa Narejos hotel. The British husband and wife were run over at a pedestrian crossing and both taken to hospital. The husband later died, while the wife is still recovering.
During his statement before the judge, in which he chose to answer only the questions posed by his defence lawyer, the driver of the car claimed he didn’t see the couple crossing the road due to the poor lighting.
His defence team will request that CCTV footage from the area be used to corroborate this story.
He also insisted that he was driving at an adequate speed, no more than 40 kilometres per hour, despite the fact that he was three times over the maximum alcohol limit allowed at the wheel.
While it was initially reported that he did not have a driving licence, this was later found to be false – he does have a licence but due to the fact that he had only recently acquired Spanish nationality, his driving licence and DNI identity card had not yet been linked up.
He also did not flee the scene after the accident, as first reported, but stopped to get out and help the two victims.
He is accused of an alleged crime of reckless homicide, a crime of serious injury and two offences against road safety. He has been released from police custody pending trial.
