New association unites towns around the Mar Menor under one umbrella

The collaborative step has been taken to promote local development and shared infrastructure in the area

A new association has been formally established to bring together the municipalities that are part of the Campo de Cartagena and Mar Menor area, marking a significant milestone in local cooperation, even though Campo de Cartagena does not officially exist as an administrative region in Murcia.

Unlike a ‘mancomunidad’, which s a formal grouping of municipalities with shared responsibilities, this newly formed association is a collaborative body with no financial burden on its members. According to its founding structure, the initiative is designed to be self-sustaining, eliminating the need for additional public funding from the signatory councils.

“The constitution of this association means collaboration between the municipalities of Campo de Cartagena and Mar Menor to promote territorial structuring, promote improvements in mobility, plan common infrastructures and seek funding to make these projects visible,” explained Councillor María José Benzal from Los Alcázares during the plenary session in which the initiative was formalised.

The plenary session of the Los Alcázares Town Hall approved the statutes underpinning the association, with support from across the political spectrum. Antonio López Campoy, spokesperson for the local Socialist Party, described the project as “of interest to everyone, which aims to join forces to fight for common projects that benefit the entire region.”

Echoing this sentiment, Mario Pérez Cervera, Mayor of Los Alcázares, said: “From the Town Hall of Los Alcázares we consider that the creation of this association is great news as all our neighbours will benefit when we manage to carry out great projects thanks to the collaboration of the different town halls, beyond their political symbols.”

The new body aims to focus on shared regional priorities, including improved infrastructure, enhanced mobility, and collective planning that could benefit residents across the entire area. Though not a formal regional government, the association could serve as a practical model for cooperation and long-term development in southern Murcia.
