Cartagena car tax jumps from €32 to €144 for some drivers
Biggest hikes hit hybrid and electric owners in latest IVTM update
If you've got your vehicle tax bill through in Cartagena, you might have spotted a nasty surprise. Some drivers are facing increases of up to 344%, with one example jumping from €32.37 last year to €143.88 this year for the exact same car. That's an extra €111.51 straight out of the pocket. The Ayuntamiento has updated its IVTM rates (Impuesto sobre Vehículos de Tracción Mecánica: annual municipal vehicle tax), and it affects everyone from scooter riders to owners of cleaner cars.Hybrid and electric vehicle drivers seem to feel the pinch most. "It's absolutely outrageous and a punishment for those who have opted for hybrid or electric vehicles, which emit less CO₂, pollute less, and make less noise," said Manolo Torres, spokesperson for the Socialist Municipal Group. He pointed out that even keeping the same car means paying more across the board this year. Moped owners have reported hikes too.
The changes come as part of broader fiscal moves by the Local Government. PSOE's Torres noted the impact on folks choosing greener options. "Hybrid and electric vehicle owners are the most affected by the price increase, precisely when the administrations should be facilitating the transition to cleaner and healthier mobility," he added.
The tax rises form part of the municipal budget approved February 11. Cartagena closed 2024 with a €17 million negative cash balance and €5 million deficit, missing spending rules. Loans make up 80% of planned investments, pending Finance Ministry approval.
Check your receipt and see where you stand. These updates are now in effect for all vehicle owners.
