ARCHIVED - You cannot dump Mar Menor waste in the Mediterranean, says Murcia Senate
The measures, which have been rejected, were proposed in an effort to halt the degradation of the Mar Menor
The Commission for the Ecological Transition of the Senate has roundly rejected several proposals presented to improve the state of the Mar Menor, one of which involved dumping waste water into the Mediterranean Sea.
The main measure put forward was reopening direct channels between the lagoon and the Mediterranean, as was done in the 1950s, to allow nitrate-laden water to flow out of the Mar Menor. Those in favour stressed that this is the only viable option to halting the degradation of Europe’s largest salt water lagoon, which has entered yet another cycle of destruction in recent weeks.
Another of the measures proposed by the motion was to build separate sanitation units with the aim of dumping clean rainwater into the Mar Menor from four key sites: San Pedro del Pinatar, San Javier, Los Alcázares and Cartagena.
Alongside this, the proposal suggested developing a double desalination system by extracting the salt from the existing aquifers in the Campo de Cartagena.
Finally, the rejected motion advocated the construction of a new drainage system, comprising a 6-metre deep and 2-metre wide ditch just two kilometres from the coastline, which would completely drain the water entering the aquifer.
