ARCHIVED - Welcome to the deserts of Mazarron, Aguilas and Lorca, the most arid climates in Spain
According to a new Aemet study, these three Murcia municipalities are officially classified as desert
The Bolnuevo erosions, Mazarrón
The State Meteorological Agency in Spain (Aemet) has published a report, entitled ‘Evolution of the Köppen climates in Spain in the period 1951-2020’, which includes the coast of Mazarrón, Lorca and Águilas as some of the territories with the most arid climate in Spain.
According to this study, these municipalities in the south of the Region of Murcia, together with two small areas in Almería and Alicante, and the islands of Lanzarote, southern Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, are classified as ‘desert’ due to the increase in temperature and decrease in the amount of rainfall they receive over the last 70 years.
The study also reveals that Spain has experienced a large increase in arid climate over the last seventy years, but especially since 1990, from 11% of the territory to almost 21% – a change which it is predicted will make Spain an originator of the ‘calima’, what is currently termed ‘Saharan dust’.
This process of aridification and desertification of once fertile lands is a direct result of the changing climate due to humanmade global warming, and as it changes habitats and ecosystems, it can lead to the extinction of many plant and animal species.
