Click HereA memorial to the nine natives of Águilas in the south-west of the Region of Murcia who were deported to the Nazi concentration camps of Mauthausen-Gusen and Buchenwald has been defaced by vandals for the second time in three months, this time by the painting of a slogan on the commemorative monolith reading "En tiempo de rojos hambre y piojos" (when the reds – or Communists - are in control, hunger and fleas).
In November the plaque paying homage to the nine deportees from Águilas was removed from the monolith in the Jardín de la Memoria in Águilas, and it appears that the location has become a target for those who sympathize with the far-right movement in the municipality. Pedro Javier López, historian and coordinator of the Amanecer 31 cultural group, interprets this latest incident as confirmation that a group inciting hatred is at work in Águilas, as individuals attempt to deny the right to historical memory.
