ARCHIVED - US experts say principal form of Covid spread is via the air
Constantly updated information on Covid as we learn more helps to better understand why basic social distancing and masks are so important
We’ve all been immersed in the covid pandemic for more than 6 months now, the crisis caused by the spread of covid affecting virtually every aspect of our daily lives to some degree.
Throughout the crisis, scientists have been working to understand this new virus and make recommendations to all of us how we can best avoid catching covid, without causing too much inconvenience to our lives, and here in Spain, the wearing of masks in public is a measure which is now mandatory, much to the disgust of some.
The debate about this topic on social media has been heated to say the least, in some cases the aggression of those opposed to wearing masks beyond belief, and the argument over whether we should have to wear masks for our own protection (and the protection of others) will run for some time yet.
Almost every day some new scientific evidence is published and one of the principal players in the US, the CDC, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, updated guidance on its website on Friday to say that coronavirus can commonly spread "through respiratory droplets or small particles, such as those in aerosols," which are produced even when a person breathes, warning that the principal form of propagation of the virus is through the air.
"Airborne viruses, including COVID-19, are among the most contagious and easily spread," the site now says.
Previously, the CDC page said that Covid-19 was thought to spread mainly between people in close contact -- about 6 feet -- and "through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks."
The update has been welcomed by the scientific community.
The page, updated Friday, still says Covid-19 most commonly spreads between people who are in close contact with one another, but now says the virus is known to spread "through respiratory droplets or small particles, such as those in aerosols, produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, sings, talks or breathes."
These particles can cause infection when "inhaled into the nose, mouth, airways, and lungs," it says. "This is thought to be the main way the virus spreads."
"There is growing evidence that droplets and airborne particles can remain suspended in the air and be breathed in by others, and travel distances beyond 6 feet (for example, during choir practice, in restaurants, or in fitness classes)," the page now says. "In general, indoor environments without good ventilation increase this risk."
The CDC has also updated the information on how to protect yourself from covid to include, "stay at least 6 feet away from others, whenever possible, “ so the rule of social distancing remains crucial.
It also points out that the use of masks should not replace other prevention measures, but be complementary to them.
It has been known by scientists for months that airborne transmission of covid exists and the Who itself released an updated version of its information about covid transmission detailing how the coronavirus can pass from one person to another, including through the air during certain medical procedures and possibly the air in crowded indoor spaces.Click for WHO report
The CDC says on its webpage:
COVID-19 is thought to spread mainly through close contact from person to person, including between people who are physically near each other (within about 6 feet). People who are infected but do not show symptoms can spread the virus to others.
COVID-19 most commonly spreads
• Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
• Through respiratory droplets or small particles, such as those in aerosols, produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, sings, talks, or breathes.
o These particles can be inhaled into the nose, mouth, airways, and lungs and cause infection. This is thought to be the main way the virus spreads.
o Droplets can also land on surfaces and objects and be transferred by touch. A person may get COVID-19 by touching the surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or eyes. Spread from touching surfaces is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.
• It is possible that COVID-19 may spread through the droplets and airborne particles that are formed when a person who has COVID-19 coughs, sneezes, sings, talks, or breathes. There is growing evidence that droplets and airborne particles can remain suspended in the air and be breathed in by others, and travel distances beyond 6 feet (for example, during choir practice, in restaurants, or in fitness classes). In general, indoor environments without good ventilation increase this risk.
