UK holidaymaker drowns while scuba diving in Spain
The Briton went into cardiac arrest off the coast of Lanzarote
A 59-year-old man from the UK has drowned while scuba diving in a well-known Lanzarote beauty spot.
The tourist was dragged from the waters off Playa Chicha beach just before lunch time on Thursday August 29 but despite the best efforts of emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
It’s understood that the holidaymaker was staying in the Purto del Carmen resort when he went into cardiac arrest on the beach, which is famous around the world with snorkelling and diving enthusiasts.
A spokesperson for a regional government-run emergency response centre said overnight: “A 59-year-old scuba diver has died following an incident at Playa Chica in the municipality of Tias.
“We started receiving calls just after 12.30pm yesterday.
“The callers said a scuba diver who was unconscious and needed emergency medical assistance had been pulled from the water.
“Emergency responders discovered he was in cardiac arrest when they arrived at the scene and practiced CPR on him without obtaining positive results.
“He was pronounced dead at the scene. Local police and firefighters were also mobilised.”
Sadly, the crystalline waters of the Canary Islands have seen their fair share of tragedy over the years.
In November 2022, a 60-year-old British diver succumbed to a cardiac arrest at Playa Flamingo, and in February last year, a 63-year-old woman, also from the UK, lost her life while scuba diving off the coast of Tenerife.
Following the November 2022 tragedy, Enrique Espinosa, manager of the Security and Emergency Consortium of Lanzarote, explained that even for the most experienced and well prepared, disaster can still strike.
“He had all the correct permits to be able to dive but diving is a high-risk sport and anything that goes wrong can be fatal,” he said at the time.
