Two Brits arrested for manslaughter on the Costa Blanca
The pair failed to call an ambulance after a 76-year-old woman had a serous fall in her Rojales home
Tragedy has once again struck the expat community on Spain's Costa Blanca, as a 76-year-old British woman has died following a domestic accident, with her daughter and a 73-year-old man believed to be a friend arrested in connection with her death.
The pair were detained after police suspected that they had failed to call an ambulance after the elderly woman fell, something which could possibly have saved her life.
According to police sources, the pensioner fell three days prior to her death at a property in Rojales, located near the popular tourist destination of Torrevieja in southern Alicante. Investigators from the Guardia Civil believe that the duo neglected to call for medical assistance in a timely manner, possibly due to the fact that they were drinking heavily at the time.
However, the suspects claim that they did raise the alarm in the early hours of Tuesday morning, March 12, once they realised that the victim had passed away.
Despite this, the investigation is currently being treated as a case of manslaughter caused by omission. It remains unclear whether the deceased woman had also consumed alcohol before her fall.
In a statement issued earlier this week, a spokesperson for the Guardia Civil confirmed that both suspects are being held in custody pending a remand hearing.
Meanwhile, a 23-year-old British expat hotel worker, Olivia Brown, has been named as the driver involved in a horrific hit-and-run accident in Lanzarote. According to reports, Ms Brown was driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs when she lost control of her vehicle and struck a group of pedestrians, resulting in the tragic death of a five-month-old British baby.
The expat is currently under house arrest at her home on the Canary Island and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday March 14, where she will likely face charges related to the tragic event.
