ARCHIVED - Two arrested after a series of muggings and thefts in the streets of Los Alcázares
The two Moroccans may yet be charged with other offences as the investigation remains open
Two young Moroccan men have been arrested by the Guardia Civil in Los Alcázares in connection with a series of at least five thefts in the streets of the town, some of them involving threatening behaviour and violence.
The investigation began in November of last year after a significant increase in street crime in Los Alcázares, with passers-by being attacked and mugged. It appeared that those responsible were highly selective in choosing their victims, targeting people who they saw to be in possession of valuable mobile phones, significant amounts of cash or other items of value, and they moved in on the targets after darkness fell in order to make it more difficult to identify them.
Suspicion soon alighted on two young North Africans, both aged 20, who have now been detained and face charges related to all five incidents, although with the investigation still open it is possible that they may yet be accused of more thefts.
The case is in the hands of the courts of San Javier.
