Travel Spain for free this summer with complimentary train tickets
Passengers can benefit from unlimited free train trips in Spain all summer with just a small deposit
Spain’s main train operator Renfe has this week opened up bookings for the next round of free travel passes, which will run from May 1 until August 31. These passes are hugely popular with frequent travellers, or those planning multiple trips during the summer months.
The promotion requires users to pay a refundable deposit of 10 euros for Cercanías, Rodalies and regional services and 20 euros for Media Distancia, which entitles them to free journeys once they complete 16 round trips within the valid duration.
Where can you travel for free with Renfe?
The most popular free routes in Spain include major cities like Asturias, Bilbao, Cadiz, Malaga, Madrid, Murcia, Alicante, Santander, San Sebastian, Sevilla, Valencia and Zaragoza, as well as regional networks such as Catalonia’s Rodalies. Additionally, travellers can enjoy half-price deals on Avant lines connecting numerous cities:
- Avant Madrid – Segovia – Valladolid
- Avant Malaga – Córdoba – Seville
- Avant Granada – Malaga
- Avant Granada – Córdoba – Seville
- Avant Madrid – Ciudad Real – Puertollano
- Avant Madrid – Toledo
- Avant Barcelona – Tarragona – Lleida
- Avant Calatayud – Zaragoza
- Avant Ourense – Santiago – A Coruña
- Avant Barcelona – Girona
- Avant Barcelona – Figueres Vilafant
- Avant Valencia – Requena Utiel
- Avant Salamanca-Segovia-Madrid (only supports multi-trip tickets).
- Avant Albacete-Cuenca-Madrid (only supports multi-trip tickets).
Medium distance trips range from 60km to 300km and cover approximately 900 trains operating in the Cercanías and Media Distancia categories daily.
The main thing passengers should be aware of is Renfe’s strict cancellation policy. Unused tickets should be cancelled at least 60 minutes ahead of time. If a traveller breaks this rule three times, their travel pass will be suspended for 30 days.
Savvy commuters leveraging the free pass can potentially save between 200 and 400 euros compared to standard fares depending on frequency and distance of their usual travels.
