Torre Pacheco prepares to install smart pedestrian crossings on busy Roldán streets
The new mobility project aims to make walking around Roldán safer and more appealing for residents and visitors

Torre Pacheco Town Council is moving ahead with plans to transform several intersections in Roldán by installing new smart pedestrian crossings. The project comes after years of heavy traffic in the town centre which has made certain crossings less safe for pedestrians.
According to the Town Council, these intersections have seen consistently high traffic volumes, making it necessary to reinforce calming measures and improve safety for those travelling on foot.
The Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan also shows that most people in the town still rely on their cars to get from A to B, even for very short journeys. The hope is that by making the local streets easier to navigate, more residents will be encouraged to leave the cars at home and opt for more sustainable ways of getting around, particularly walking.
To make it possible for residents and visitors to move around Roldán on foot more safely, the project includes the purchase and installation of specialist equipment that will convert three traditional pedestrian crossings into smart crossings.
These nifty systems use sensors capable of detecting when a person approaches the crossing. Once activated they switch on enhanced lighting in both the horizontal and vertical signage which makes the crossing area more visible and gives drivers a clear early warning.
The Town Council is confident that this technological upgrade will reduce the risk of accidents and address long standing issues with poor visibility.
Beyond improving road safety, the City Council emphasizes that this technology will allow for the collection of real-time data on pedestrian traffic. This information will be used both to analyze mobility patterns and to plan future interventions with greater precision. It will even pave the way for creating predictive models that will help manage traffic and mobility in Roldán more efficiently.
Beyond the immediate improvement to road safety, the Town Council also highlights the value of the data these devices will generate. The sensors will provide real time information on pedestrian movements throughout the day, which will help the authorities to analyse mobility patterns, plan future improvements more precisely and eventually create predictive models to manage traffic and movement across Roldán more effectively.
This initiative is also part of the town's strategy to consolidate a network of connected services under the Smart Town umbrella. The smart pedestrian crossings will allow for the integration of additional sensors and technological devices wherever they are installed, expanding the Town Council's capacity to monitor public spaces and improve the quality of services it provides to citizens.
