This is where a brand-new dog-friendly beach has opened in Almería
The move is a step towards inclusivity with a dedicated pet area in an area of Almería that has never had one before

Mojácar Town Council has formally inaugurated its first beach area specifically designated for dogs, making the long-used section of coastline at Perulejo beach in Macenas an official dog-friendly space. Although locals and visitors had already been bringing their pets to the area, the announcement marks the town’s commitment to creating a more inclusive and pet-friendly environment.
“This is the result of a clear demand from residents and visitors, and we are delighted to have made it a reality,” said the Mayor of Mojácar, Fran García, during the inauguration. “It is another step towards a more inclusive Mojácar, more comfortable and designed for everyone.”
Mayor García was joined by the Councillor for Tourism, María Gracia Alarcón, in officially opening the area, named ‘Playa Canina del Perulejo’. “Thanks to those of you who are already enjoying it responsibly. We continue to add spaces that make Mojácar a unique destination,” the mayor added.
Situated near the Torre de Macenas Castle, the beach measures 12 metres wide and 118 metres long. It is now the second dog beach in the Levante Almeriense, following the earlier designation of a similar space in Cuevas del Almanzora.
Due to its classification, the dog beach is excluded from the official list of designated bathing waters, meaning that anyone who chooses to swim there does so at their own discretion.
Visitors to the dog beach must comply with regulations set out in the Law for the Protection of Animal Rights and Welfare. This includes carrying identification as the dog’s owner or guardian, ensuring the animal is microchipped, properly registered in the regional Companion Animal Registry, and up to date with vaccinations and deworming. Dogs must remain on a lead and under control at all times.
The initiative reflects a growing trend across Spanish coastal towns to provide more inclusive recreational spaces, recognising the needs of pet owners and enhancing Mojácar’s appeal as a year-round destination.
