ARCHIVED - The search goes on for a missing Briton as the Storm Gloria death toll in Spain rises to 14
The latest confirmed victim was a Colombian man who disappeared in Ibiza last Tuesday
Storm Gloria may have left Spain at the end of last week but unfortunately there are still people missing after the flooding and massive waves in the Balearics, and on Monday the death toll rose to 14 when the Guardia Civil confirmed that a body which was found on Saturday in La Cala de Sant Vicent, in Ibiza, was that of a 41-year-old Colombian who disappeared a week ago.
The deceased was a resident of the area and was last seen alive last Tuesday morning while he was taking a walk. When he failed to appear later in the day it was suspected that one of the waves had swept him away, and this now seems to have been the case.
Among those still missing is a 25-year-old British man who also disappeared on Tuesday 21st January, after the Guardia reported on Monday that a body which was washed ashore in Aigües Blanques the day before had clearly been in the water for over a week and was therefore not related to the storm. As a result the search for the missing man continues along the coast between Pollença and Artà.
On the other hand, another body which was found in Illetes, in Formentera, is that of a 62-year-old British national named Kenneth McPherson, who disappeared in November in Torrevieja in the province of Alicante.
Meanwhile, the seriousness of Storm Gloria is underlined by the fact that it has now become the most lethal weather event so far this century in Spain, ahead of the 2018 flooding in Mallorca and the “gota fría” storm of September 2012 in Murcia, Andalucía and Valencia. The highest death toll in the 20th century was the one caused by torrential rain in October 1973, when another “gota fría” caused the deaths of hundreds of people in Puerto Lumbreras and Lorca (Murcia).
The meteorological service of Catalunya has already confirmed that Storm Gloria brought more rain to the region than any other storm since 1932, and that the figures of 500 millimetres in the Ebro delta accompanied by 7-metre waves are unprecedented.
