The Region of Murcia finally has a president after more than 3 months of delays

Fernando López Miras has been sworn in as President of the Government of the Region of Murcia this Monday September 11, after what he himself referred to as a “long journey since the last regional elections” which were held on May 28 this year.

As standing president and interim leader of the regional government, he had already remained in power nominally for the last three and a half months, but his official investiture was held up by a dispute with minor party VOX.

López Miras and his PP party won the most votes in the regional elections last May, but did not do enough to gain an absolute majority that would allow them to rule unilaterally.

As such, they will be accompanied in the regional Murcia government by VOX, who finally decided to gift the PP their votes in the investiture in exchange for being part of a coalition government.

The concession comes on the very last possible day before the deadline. If this had not been the case, new elections would have been called.

“Two political formations have been able to understand that party interests should be moulded to a greater cause – the Region of Murcia and its governability,” said López Miras in his swearing in speech. “Dialogue has made the investiture and the formation of the Government possible.”

He stressed that “getting this far has not been easy, but sanity has prevailed over political opportunism”.

The leader of the regional PP party and the government went on to outline that education, employment and the environmental care of the Mar Menor would be the cornerstones of his next legislature.

In the meantime, the fate of the central Spanish government remains mired in similar problems, with politicians on both the left and right unable to form a satisfactory alliance to constitute a government, which may lead to fresh national elections in the coming months.
