Temperatures plummet following Storm Kirk: Spain weather forecast October 10-13
A new Atlantic storm is expected to hit Spain before the weekend, bringing widespread rain and storms
Maximum temperatures expected on Friday afternoon
Former hurricane Kirk made landfall in northern Spain on Wednesday October 9 and while the violent storm lasted less than 24 hours, it has caused widespread devastation. Cars were crushed and people were injured by falling branches, felled trees blocked roads and train lines and dozens of flights were cancelled and diverted due to the gale-force winds.
On Thursday October 10, Kirk will move away from Spain but the unsettled weather will continue, especially in the north of the country, where the wind will remain particularly strong for several hours.
Although the extreme south missed the worst of the weather, these gusts will also be present along the Mediterranean coast and in the east of Spain during the morning.
Overall, the day will be cloudy and there’s a chance of showers everywhere. Temperatures will drop across the board, and the mercury won’t move past the low-20s in most places.
A new Atlantic storm, called Berenice, is expected to approach from the southwest of Spain on Friday October 11. This will result in overcast skies and fairly widespread showers, but once again, the north of the country will bear the brunt of the storms.
Daytime temperatures will continue to drop in the southwest and along the Mediterranean coast, although thermometers will creep up in the Canary Islands.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has activated a yellow warning for storms in Andalucía while Catalonia and Navarra are on alert for heavy rain and winds.
Things will take a turn for the worse on Saturday October 12, with much more intense rain and storms upgrading Andalucía to an orange alert. The rest of the southeast can expect heavy rain as well but the entire country and the Balearic Islands are likely to be damp and overcast.
Despite this, temperatures are expected to rise in many parts of Spain with the exception of the extreme south and westernmost provinces.
All of the weather warnings have been lifted for Sunday October 13, although the country will remain under the influence of an Atlantic low pressure system and its fronts. The skies will be mostly cloudy or overcast, and there is a good possibility of rain at any point in the day.
This rain could develop into stormy intervals, but this is more likely in Andalucía and on the Mediterranean coasts.
Maximum temperatures are expected to rise inland and in the Balearic Islands, while slight decreases will prevail on the coasts and in the Canary Islands. Night-time temperatures will slightly decrease except in the Balearic Islands and the south-east of the country, where few changes are forecast.
