Spanish traffic police crack down on improper use of indicators

The use of indicators (or lack thereof) is a bit of a bugbear for drivers in Spain, particularly on roundabouts since the rules are so different from the UK. Cars appear to dart in and out of traffic with little warning and vehicles often jump across lanes at the last second.

It’s little surprise then that incorrect indicating contributes to a huge number of accidents on Spanish roads and the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has decided to get tough on rule-breakers in January. Police will be on the lookout for motorists refusing to use their turn signals, so it’s important that you know the rules to avoid a potential fine.

When should indicators be used?

Drivers must indicate when they are leaving a roundabout or pulling into a parking space, when they are changing lanes, as well as any time they turn, change direction, join a new road or overtake another car.

These manoeuvres must all be preceded by a turn signal without exception, even if there are no other vehicles close by or the road appears to be completely clear. Up until now, failing to indicate or using these lights at the wrong time were considered minor infractions but the DGT now plans to hit motorists where it hurts: their pockets.

How much are the fines?

According to the General Traffic Regulations, the financial penalty for failing to indicate can be as much as 200 euros, the same sanction that will be slapped on drivers who use their turn signals incorrectly, as this could confuse other road users.

What’s more, motorists will be fined a minimum of 80 euros if they are too slow in switching on their indicators before a change in direction.
