ARCHIVED - Spanish Government aims to vaccinate majority of the population by the middle of 2021
The government has committed to 140 million doses as part of the EU buying scheme
The Spanish Government expects that "a very substantial part" of the Spanish population will be vaccinated against Covid by mid-2021.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said on Friday that Spain will be allocated up to 140 million doses of the different vaccines as part of the EU group purchase agreement and has been formulating a vaccination strategy since September to roll-out the vaccines once they become available.
The PM said that the EU has already signed three contracts for the purchase of vaccines that are about to end their trials for 1,000 million doses and the signing of another two contracts to purchase 400 million more doses is "imminent". In total, the EU will be purchasing 1,400 million doses, of which 10% will be allocated to Spain, that is, 140 million.
This quantity is sufficient to vaccinate the entire Spanish population, with 20 million doses spare, given that the Covid vaccine is supplied in two doses. Logically, not all of the vaccines will be available at the same time and some may not even pass their trials, so the EU has effectively “hedged its bets” by pre-ordering a series of different vaccines.
The Council of Ministers is meeting next week to discuss the plans for roll-out, which have included the participation of medical societies, nursing societies and ethics committees, and will be validated by experts appointed by the autonomous communities before final approval. Next week decisions will also be made at a nationwide level regarding the Puente de la Constitución Bank Holiday in early December and the Christmas holiday period. Already the regional governments are announcing restrictions for these periods and preparing their own plans to avoid the normal mass movement of people which take place around these dates to try and keep the infections down, there are naturally fears of a “third wave” following the festive season when the public is most likely to mix socially; normally the flu season begins in earnest almost as soon as the festive season is over and families have enjoyed two weeks of socialising and festivities.
The PM travelled to La Rioja this Friday as part of a regional tour that began last week in Navarra.
During his visit he said that the latest accumulated incidence data in Spain suggests that "we are on the right track" but has also warned that "we cannot relax, much less at this critical time like Christmas."
