ARCHIVED - Spain reducing coronavirus quarantine for close contacts to 10 days
It is widely accepted that compliance with the current 14 day quarantine is low
The Ministry hopes that the level of compliance will be greater if the quarantine period is shorter.
The Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, has confirmed that the quarantine period for the close contacts of people positive for COVID-19 will be reduced to 10 days without the need for a PCR test as before.
Last week the Minister said that Spain would wait to see what other countries would do after France reduced its quarantine period to 7 days.
Illa foresees "a broad, if not unanimous, agreement of the autonomous communities" to reduce the quarantines of positive contacts from 14 to 10 days, as Catalonia or the Basque Country have already decided to do.
This morning Catalonia announced its intention to reduce the quarantine perid to 10 days.
The measure would come into effect immediately and "would be extended to all autonomous communities."
Currently, the quarantines of positive cases can be reduced to 10 days, as long as there have been no symptoms within the preceding three days.
In the case of close contacts, the isolation can also be reduced to 10 days if on the 10th day a PCR test returns a negative result.
Switzerland and the Netherlands have already reduced their quarantines to 10 days, while in France positives must only remain isolated for 7 days.
The objective of this measure is to guarantee compliance, as throughout Spain it has become increasingly obvious that the compliance level is low and many quarantine orders are not being respected.
The 14-day period which is currently the accepted norm for covid, was proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the first weeks of the epidemic, when very little was known about how the virus acted.
Since then, our knowledge has grown considerably, and in general, it is now accepted that a person can show symptoms or transmit the virus for up to two weeks, although by the last four days the virulence is only 7-10% of during the peak days of the infection. 90% of people will be positive for around 10 days after contracting the virus, although in around 2.5% of Covid cases, the first symptoms take more than two weeks to appear. In recent months, cases with incubation periods of up to 27 days have been reported.
