ARCHIVED - Spain passes 31,000 covid deaths mark and a week with 10,000 new positives a day
The number of cases nationally has doubled in just over a month
Although the Spanish Ministry of Health is keen to put out its message that the coronavirus cases in Spain are starting to level off in this “second wave”, there are few on the ground who believe that the country is anywhere near a second peak, with the weather remaining warm and mild and no sign yet of the autumn storms that would normally drive the public into heated buildings with their coughs and sniffles.
Flu season is still weeks away and covid is rife, having successfully spread throughout the population during the summer BBQs, botellons, coastal holidays and summer family gatherings which are such a part of the Spanish way of life.
Although we’re all fully aware by now that the majority of the population, particularly the young and healthy who are the main protagonists of summer mixing, experience only mild cases or are completely asymptomatic, we know that the danger lies with the people that they in turn infect, which follows a proven course of a rise in cases, followed by a rise in hospitaliations, and then a rise in deaths, the process spread over a period of weeks.
Fatalities
As anticipated, given the rising number of cases in Spain during the last month we are now starting to see a rise in deaths. The official number of people killed by coronavirus has passed 31,000 this Wednesday, just 10 days after passing the threshold of 30,000, according to data published by the Ministry of Health today.
130 new deaths have been registered in the last 24 hours, raising the official mortality figure to 31,034 and the total for the last week is 517.
In just ten days this rate has doubled, according to the statistics from the Ministry of Health.
By Region, total deaths to date and deaths in the last week;
1,714 deaths in Andalusia (46 in the last week); Aragon 1,360 (51 in the last seven days); Asturias 342 (two in the last week); Balearic Islands 285 (eight in the last seven days); Canary Islands 218 (11 in a week); Cantabria 232 (four in the last seven days); Castilla-La Mancha 3,080 (19 in the last week); Castilla y León 2,970 (42 in the last seven days); Catalonia 5,823 (10 in the last seven days); Ceuta, 10 deaths have been recorded since the beginning of the pandemic (one in the last week); Valencian Community 1,566 (26 in the last seven days); Extremadura 557 (17 in one week); Galicia 721 (24 in the last seven days); Madrid 9,161 (171 in the last seven days); Melilla four; Murcia 197; Navarra 562 (13 in the last seven days); Basque Country 1,825 (54 in the last seven days); and La Rioja 407 (18 in the last seven days).

New cases
This Wednesday the total number of coronavirus cases reported in Spain has risen by 11,289 new positives (4,143 diagnosed within the last 24 hours), bringing the total amount to 693,556 confirmed cases. This is the seventh consecutive day on which a figure higher than 10,000 daily positives has been reported.
This rapid increase in case numbers means that in just over a month, confirmed cases of coronavirus have doubled in Spain. On August 15th, Spain reported 342,813 positives and this Wednesday, September 23rd, the positives have reached 693,556.
Hospitalisations
Hospitalizations are also steadily increasing and there are now 10,755 patients with Covid admitted to Spanish hospitals at the moment (1,436 of them in ICU) who, according to data provided by the Government, occupy 9.2% of the available beds. The occupancy of ICU beds has now risen to an average of 16.8% , although there is significant regional variation on these figures. In the last 24 hours there have been 1,362 admissions and 1,266 discharges.
Cases in the largest and most populous regions:
Madrid
The Community of Madrid (Region of Madrid) has reported the highest number of positives; 3,730, one in three of the national level (3,809 according to the data published by the regional government).
Madrid has also reported 40 deaths in the last 24 hours, its highest figure since the end of the state of alarm, and the fifth consecutive day exceeding thirty deaths.
Catalonia
Catalonia has reported 1,051 new positives, while the Generalitat has reported 600 cases confirmed by PCR and 16 deaths. Although the incidence has fallen by 1.6% compared to Tuesday, the risk of re-emergence in the community has grown again, as has the speed of contagion.
Andalucía (Andalusia)
In Andalusia the Junta has notified 1,551 positives and 12 deaths in the last 24 hours. This is the second worst daily number of cases since the pandemic began. The majority of positives have been concentratedin the provinces of Malaga (511) and Seville (405).
Comunidad Valenciana (Region of Valencia)
In the Valencian Community, the Generalitat has reported 658 new positives and 14 deaths due to Covid. The cases are distributed mainly between the provinces of Alicante (336) and Valencia (283), while Castellón has reported only 38.
