The road leading to the coves of Bolnuevo, one of Mazarrón’s most visited natural attractions, is set to undergo improvements to protect it against water erosion caused by heavy rains. According to Mazarrón Town Council, work will begin in the coming weeks and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

 

The €150,000 project, funded through the European Union’s Next Generation funds as part of the Tourism Sustainability Plan for Destinations, will focus on increasing the road’s durability and safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The route, which attracts thousands of visitors annually, offers scenic walking and cycling paths along the coastline, including nearby beaches such as Cueva Lobos, Covaticas and Percheles, and the area is also popular for its electric buggy guided tours.

 

To prevent damage from storm runoff, workers will install drainage ditches to channel water flow, helping to reduce erosion and prevent gully formation. Speed bumps will also be constructed at key crossings where runoff has been identified, to limit the impact of flowing water on the road’s structure.

 

The surface will be improved by levelling out irregularities and reinforcing the base with compacted gravel, making it safer and more comfortable for users in all weather conditions. Signage will also be updated, with new information points added to help visitors navigate routes and learn more about local attractions.

 

Councillor for the Natural Environment, Gaspar Miras, said the improvements would “create a safer, more functional infrastructure that respects the natural environment”. He emphasised that better surface stability and improved water management are key to preserving the path and surrounding landscape.
