ARCHIVED - Road connecting Los Nietos and Los Belones reopens after flood prevention work
The road connecting Los Belones and Los Nietos re-opened to traffic on May 28
The reinforcement works which have been undertaken in the Rambla de la Carrasquilla in Los Nietos in order to minimise the effects of further flooding in the area are finally coming to an end.
From Friday (May 28), the road re-opened to traffic, as most of the work on the main body of the road has finished. The final elements of the project should be completely finalized within the next week.
The project will increase the water drainage capacity of current road as it crosses the Rambla de la Carrasquilla. This part of the road, which is prone to flooding during periods of heavy rain, will be able to drain four times as much rainwater, and the infrastructure put in place should hopefully be more than sufficient to cope with heavy rain.
As part of the reinforcement efforts, four frames which can evacuate up to 260 cubic metres of water per second have been installed and the ditch attached to the speed bump has been filled in to avoid the accumulation of rainwater.
Another improvement on the road is the installation of a barrier to prevent the erosion of the slopes leading down to the riverbed. Stones and concrete will be placed on the four frames which encase the crossing to prevent the side of the Rambla from deteriorating.
This road, which connects Los Belones with Los Nietos, is normally used by 3,222 vehicles a day and the new improvements, which have already been tested successfully by the rain on Sunday (May 23), should prevent further inconvenience for drivers.
