ARCHIVED - Region of Murcia once again spent less than promised on the Mar Menor in 2021
This year, the regional government has only spent 12 million of the 50 million euros budgeted for saving the Mar Menor
Over the course of 2021, the regional government of Murcia has reportedly only spent 12 million euros of the 50 million euros that were earmarked for protecting the Mar Menor lagoon.
This is in addition to 300 million euros promised by Spain’s national government between 2021 and 2023 that are also yet to arrive.
For 2022, the Region of Murcia has promised a further 85 million euros to help recover the Mar Menor to its former state, although it’s been asserted that this won’t all materialise because the regional government has a 26-year track record of not meeting 100% of their budget promises allocate to helping the Mar Menor.
According to the socialist opposition party, “It would be good to know in advance to which projects they are going to dedicate each and every single cent of these funds, although we know that they are not going to spend 100%, because they have never done so”.
Murcia’s Mar Menor lagoon is mired in a pollution scandal that is killing natural wildlife due to nitrates leaking into the water from illegal irrigation on farms in the surrounding area.
Just recently, several top officials in the government, the local water watchdog and agricultural associations were held criminally responsible in court for their part in contaminating and failing to stop contamination in the lagoon.
