Click HereSome of the most attractive of the many beaches along the coastline of Águilas are those which are more difficult to reach, as they are still relatively unspoilt in comparison with much of the Mediterranean coastline in Spain, and an example of this is the one known as Playa Amarilla.
Located opposite the islet of Isla del Fraile, until recently it was very hard to reach Playa Amarilla on land, as it is protected by the mountains which run along this stretch of the coastline between Águilas and the headland of Cabo Cope. But when the Isla del Fraile residential development was built earlier this century a steep road was built leading down to the shore, and now the national department of Costas has announced that work will be carried out before next summer to improve access still further.
The plans include a staircase leading down to the sand from the road and the parking area, effectively opening up the beach to far more visitors and making family visits a good deal more manageable than has been the case until now.
Playa Amarilla is especially popular with snorkelers crossing to the island, where the remains of an old Roman fish salting factory still stand: however, this stretch of water can become dangerous when the currents are strong, and it should be pointed out there is no lifeguard service.
