ARCHIVED - Over 100 flights cancelled as separatist demonstrators overrun Barcelona airport
Widespread protests over prison sentences for Catalan separatist leaders
At least 110 flights into and out of the airport of Barcelona-El Prat were cancelled on Monday as separatist protesters occupied the terminal building and caused chaos for travellers after the publication of the verdicts in the trials of Catalan pro-independence leaders during the morning.
In clashes with the forces of law and order it is reported by medical emergency services that at least 78 people were injured, with police charges against the demonstrators being the first seen in Catalunya since 1st October 2017, when the separatists attempted to hold an outlawed referendum on the issue of independence from Spain.
All over the region protesters gathered to express their anger at the prison terms of between 9 and 13 years which were decided upon for 9 of the 12 defendants in the trial, demanding freedom and an amnesty for the “political prisoners”. Rail and bus services were severely disrupted and major roads were blocked by barricades and sit-down protests while at one stage Terminal 1 of El Prat airport was filled with demonstrators, making it impossible for either passengers or crew to reach the aircraft on which they were scheduled to fly.
There were also disturbances in the city centre of Barcelona, where the police charged demonstrators on Via Laietana after a group of people broke through the barriers erected around the police headquarters and began to throw objects at the officers on duty outside.
The disruption on Monday has already overflowed into Tuesday, with flights to and from El Prat having been cancelled, and with the situation in Catalunya so volatile at present all travellers are advised to keep abreast of the latest developments before travelling to the airport.
