Orange warning for 41-degree temps: Murcia weather forecast July 18-21
The first heatwave of the summer will peak on Saturday in the Region of Murcia

Although the start of the summer has been fairly mild in Spain overall, the Region of Murcia has hardly had a chance to draw breath since June as those thermometers just keep climbing. Now, the first proper heatwave of the season is descending on southern Spain, placing Murcia on high alert for extreme temperatures over the weekend.
The weather will still be pretty stable on Thursday July 18, with partly cloudy skies and plenty more of the suspended Saharan dust that appeared earlier in the week. The mercury will start to creep up slowly though, although a brisk westerly wind should keep things feeling relatively cool during the afternoon.
It will really begin heating up on Friday July 19, and the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a yellow alert for the beginning of the heatwave. Temperatures will hover between 39 and 40ºC throughout the Region of Murcia, with the exception of the coast, where it will be a little fresher.
The worst will come on Saturday July 20, when the maximum temperatures will ramp right up to 43ºC in the capital, 42ºC in Yecla and a sweltering 41ºC in Lorca. The night will also be stuffy and uncomfortable, as the mercury is unlikely to dip much below 25ºC. An orange weather warning has been activated in the majority of the Region for extreme heat.
So, although the heatwave in Spain will generally reach its peak on Friday, “in the Region of Murcia the highest temperatures will be recorded on Saturday,” according to Aemet meteorologist Adrián García.
We’ll have a bit of a break on Sunday July 21 thanks to the arrival of a cooler Atlantic air mass, particularly inland, but the thermometers will remain just shy of 40ºC in the likes of Caravaca de la Cruz, and they won’t dip below the mid-30s anywhere in the Region.
Aemet expects this Spanish heatwave to last until July 25, but it could wrap up a lot sooner in the Region.
“There is some uncertainty about next week, but everything indicates that the heat wave will last a relatively short time,” explains Adrián García.
Minimum and maximum temperatures in Murcia this weekend
- Thursday July 18: Min 19ºC; Max 37ºC
- Friday July 19: Min 22ºC; Max 40ºC
- Saturday July 20: Min 22ºC; Max 41ºC
- Sunday July 21: Min 21ºC; Max 39ºC
