ARCHIVED - New plan to reactivate Portman tourism
The Murcia government are investing one million euros into the renovation on Portman bay
The regional government has given the green light to a renovation plan for the bay of Portman which aims to radically transform the bay’s image and attract tourists once again.
This Sustainable Tourism Plan is yet another attempt to regenerate the area, which belongs to the municipality of La Unión, after sterile waste was dumped into the bay during the years of intensive open-cast mining of the Sierra Minera and caused one of the biggest environmental disasters in the Region.
With the help of the Secretary of State for Tourism and La Union’s Town Hall, the regional government plan to carry out a series of projects over the next three years with the million-euro budget, including setting up the José Maestre tunnel mining itinerary to attract tourists to the area and creating another strategic viewpoint next to the Molienda.
Also included in the restoration project is the renovation and recovery of the old railway line and the mining train. Rehabilitating the Orcelitana chimney, the Roberto laudry pipes route, the ‘Los Chorros' viewpoint over the sea and the itinerary to the Cala del Caballo is also on the governments to-do list.
Another portion of the budget is going to the used to revitalize Calle Mayor and promote local businesses, especially the hospitality sector, as well as to create a viewing point in the old fishing port. In addition, signage will be placed on emblematic buildings, which will also be beautified, to draw attention to the history of Portman.
To further increase touristic appeal the Hospital de la Caridad is going to be improved in order to enable a tourist information point.
However, these renovations should have gone ahead years ago and the Murcia government has criticised the national government for bringing the project to a halt in 2019 and has accused the Spanish central authorities of having a complete lack of interest in restoring the bay, despite the area posing a health risk to the public: heavy metals were found in new mothers breastmilk in a recent study.
