ARCHIVED - New naval submarine history display opens at the Museo Naval in Cartagena
The Isaac Peral room traces the history of Spanish military submarines and submariners
The Museo Naval, the naval museum in Cartagena, has officially opened its new “Sala de Submarinos” or submarine room in the part of the building named after Cartagena-born inventor, engineer and naval officer Isaac Peral.
The “Sala Isaac Peral” and its new exhibits open to the public as of 22nd October from Tuesday to Saturday between 10.00 and 14.00, and feature displays relating to the history of submarines in the Spanish Navy. This history dates back over 100 years, and visitors can trace the story from its earliest beginnings right up until the present day, learning not only about the development of different types of submarines over the years but also more “human” aspects such as the living conditions in which submariners have sailed.
The display is located alongside the original submarine designed and built by Isaac Peral y Caballero, whose contribution to the worldwide development of such boats was crucial. Its opening marks the completion of this section of the Museo Naval devoted to the submarine division of the navy, a division which has been closely associated with the port and city of Cartagena since 1915 although Peral’s pioneering electric-powered craft was launched as long ago as 1888.
