New free car park in La Manga almost ready to open
The newly built open-air parking lot in La Manga del Mar Menor will have space for 279 vehicles to park free of charge
The construction of a large, new car park is nearly complete in La Manga del Mar Menor that the Region of Murcia government says it has created “to promote low-carbon mobility”.
It has enough space for 279 vehicles and is located on a plot of land next to the La Manga Fire Station, near the Hotel Lagomar and the Galería Comercial Casino shopping centre, which was previously used “as a temporary storage area for all kinds of materials and waste”.
“The aim is to make La Manga del Mar Menor a more sustainable and accessible environment with the regeneration of underused urban spaces to make them friendlier and more functional for citizens,” said the regional authorities in a statement.
It has cost them 648,015 euros to build this new car park, with 80% of the money coming from the ‘Feder funds’ as part of the European Strategy for Sustainable and Integrated Development (EDUSI) ‘La Manga 365’.
It will be free to park there, and there will even be charging points for electric vehicles, shaded areas to keep cars cool, bicycle racks and parking spaces for people with reduced mobility.
The hope is that this new parking lot, which is in close proximity to beaches, shops and hotels, will help to relieve traffic congestion on the main access road to La Manga, especially during the summer months when it can get incredibly busy with cars.
