ARCHIVED - New DGT drones can automatically issue fines; this country cannot bear any more deaths says DGT
15 camouflaged vans join the DGT traffic armoury for this summer and three of the new drones can automaticallty issue fines in the same way as a speed camera
Normally the first weekend in July sees a massive movement of families from the cities of Spain to coastal regions and holiday properties as “Operation Summer” gets underway, but this year even the DGT traffic department has no idea how many people will leave the cities and head for the coast due to the current Covid situation.
Last year 91 million “displacements” or journeys were undertaken during the peak weekends of July and August and this year the DGT has announced that it will be focusing its traffic vigilance efforts into reducing the number of deaths on the road during the peak weeks with the campaign 'This country cannot bear any more deaths . When driving, take extreme precautions, ’referring to the more than 28,000 official deaths that have been recorded in Spain due to the coronavirus.
This year the focus is on modern technology and the DGT is adding hundreds of radars, helicopters, camouflaged vans and drones to its campaign, as well as increasing alcohol and drug controls, determined to catch as many infractions as possible and reduce the number of deaths through dangerous driving.
This year their armoury includes
• 760 fixed speed control radars
• 548 mobile speed control radars.
• 12 Pegasus helicopters.
• 11 drones (3 of these can automatically issue fines if an infraction is detected).
• 216 belt control cameras and mobile telephones.
• 15 camouflaged vans +
• Speed, alcohol and drug controls
All of which is designed to take “extraordinary measures and apply extreme vigilance” and reduce the number of road deaths this summer.
So be aware, there may not be any visible signs of a speed trap on the road ahead, but there could be a drone overhead issuing a fine or a camouflaged “multavan” (multa means fine) van pulling alongside just when you thought no-one was watching!
Take care!
