ARCHIVED - New covid restrictions take force in Murcia Region from Wednesday
These affect: Abanilla, Alhama de Murcia, Archena, Beniel, Cieza, Fortuna, Fuente Álamo, Jumilla, Lorca, Molina de Segura, Totana and Santomera.
This Wednesday, the specific measures and recommendations introduced by the Murcian regional health authority to try and limit the spread of the Covid virus come into force in twelve municipalities and several residential districts of the cities with the largest populations, Murcia and Cartagena.
These are valid for the next seven days and may be extended.
The details have been published on Wednesday in the Official Gazette of the Region of Murcia (the BORM), and affect the municipalities of Abanilla, Alhama de Murcia, Archena, Beniel, Cieza, Fortuna, Fuente Álamo, Jumilla, Lorca, Molina de Segura, Totana and Santomera.
The restrictive measures included consist of the restriction to 40% of the maximum capacity inside establishments dedicated to the hostelry and catering industry (ie bars, restaurants etc), as well as a limitation of the opening and closing hours for food and beverage retail stores, which must remain closed between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
The BORM also includes recommendations for these areas including the normal social distancing, handwashing etc as well as a recommendation to the elderly, infirm and those considered most at risk to avoid all but the most essential contact and not to make unnecessary jpurneys outdoors.
Totana, Fortuna and Abanilla will remain in flexibilised phase 1 confinement for a further week, although schoolchildren will be permitted to return to school from Thursday. For pupils in Totana this will be the start of their school year as classes to date have all been online.
There are concerns about the rising level of case numbers in the larger municipalities of Cartagena and Murcia. Up until recently the capital city has managed to keep its accumulated incidence rate low, in spite of the high number of cases due to the size of its population (453,258), but the city has reported 1,052 cases during the last week, an increase of 40%, and has now reached a rate of 232 per 100,000 of population, only just below the regional average. Until recently, the bulk of the cases were focused in three districts which were subject to localised restrictions, mainly affecting the hospitality sector, the residential districts being Barriomar-La Purísima, Buenos Aire and El Carmen, but the decision has now been taken to extend this further to El Infante, Vistabella, San Andrés and the pedanías of Nonduermas, La Ñora and Puente Tocinos.
There are also concerns about the Cartagena municipality, which is the second largest city in terms of population (214,802) and has recently seen a significant increase in its IA rate. Cartagena has remained around and below 100 for the last few weeks but has suddenly increased to 162, with over 100 new cases this weekend alone.
As a result, the San Antón district, which has the highest rate of 336 per 100,000, will be subjected to the same restrictions as the affected districts of Murcia city. This particular area is close to the city centre, and is a relatively impoverished area of the city, with a high level of older housing and is popular with immigrants.
The same restrictions will apply to these districts of Cartagena and Murcia.
