ARCHIVED - New Brexit deal means the same as the old Brexit deal for expat UK nationals
The novelties of the Boris Johnson deal mainly concern the Irish border and he has maintained Theresa May’s deal concerning citizens’ rights
With Boris Johnson and the European Union declaring on Thursday that they have reached agreement on a new version of the Brexit deal for which Theresa May failed to gain sufficient support in the House of Commons earlier this year the question arises of how if at all the most recent agreement will affect UK expats living in Spain and other EU countries.
The answer, it seems, is that the new elements of the deal focus chiefly on solving the problem of the Irish border, and on the topic of citizens' rights Mr Johnson has stuck with the agreements made by Theresa May. In other words, UK nationals living legally in an EU country at the end of the transition period on 31 December 2020 will be able to stay and enjoy the same rights.
Anyone arriving after that will be subject to each country's immigration rules.
At least until the end of the transition period UK nationals will still be able to move freely to any EU country.
Now, of course, the Prime Minister has to convince the House of Commons to approve the new text…
