ARCHIVED - Murcian regional president supports state of emergency and curfew measures
Fernando López Miras has issued an institutional statement supporting the measures taken today by the Spanish Government.
The regional premier emphasised; “Beating the virus is everyone's job more than ever. And what we have to do is very simple. We return to the initial message, which gave us such good results in the first wave of the pandemic: stay home, stay home. If you don't have to go out for something you need, stay home.”
The Murcian Regional president, Fernando López Miras, has issued a statement strongly supporting the measures implemented today by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, welcoming the mechanisms given to the regional governments which will enable them to continue fighting the coronavirus at a local level.
Although the state of emergency declaration establishes two main basic rules; a nationwide curfew and a limit on the size of groups meeting to 6 people, the majority of the measures will be left to the discretion of the regional governments of the 17 autonomous regions, who can decide for themselves the level of restrictions imposed within their regions. Click here for the main article about the declaration made by the Prime Minister today which examines the situation in detail.
This is the level of control requested by the Murcian regional Government, which had requested the mechanisms which would enable it to enforce stricter measures without the need to consistently refer to the courts in order to impose the necessary measures to restrict movement or confine the population; both of these are not permitted under the Spanish Constitution unless a state of emergency has been declared.
Although the Prime Minister and Murcian regional premier continue to insist that lockdowns will not take place in this second wave of the pandemic unless specific areas are critical, there is no doubt that stricter measures are needed at the moment due to the level of uncontrolled transmission in Spain at the moment, and the Murcian premier says that tomorrow the health department will be evaluating the measures and working out how and where to apply them based on the current epidemiological situation in the 45 municipalities of the region.
For today, the curfew will apply from 23:00 tonight until 06:00 in the morning; the time of this may change tomorrow in the Murcia region.
In his declaration, the Murcian regional premier included the following:
“As you know, since the beginning of the pandemic, the regional government has adopted numerous measures in order to stop the transmission of the virus. Today, we will ask the population for even greater efforts. The irresponsible behavior of a few is harming the vast majority in a marked fashion: they not only facilitate contagion, they become agents of disease and their actions can collapse the health system. The lack of compliance with simple security measures complicates the work of health workers and means that the enormous effort of exemplary professionals, such as hoteliers, does not have the desired effect.
My recognition and gratitude to the responsibility that the hospitality professionals apply in their establishments goes without saying. They are one of the sectors most affected by this health crisis, and those that are paying the highest cost for it, and for that reason, I ask all of society that we do not let them face this hard challenge alone, and that, now more than ever let's help the hospitality industry by adapting to the new schedules demanded by the situation of the pandemic. They are an important, fundamental part of our productive and labor fabric, and essential for economic reactivation.
The economic measures to support the sector implemented by the regional government also need the participation and solidarity of all of society, but with responsibility. We want to avoid total closure, as has happened in other autonomous communities, but for this, we must all get involved, strictly complying with the scientific and health criteria established by experts in the fight against the pandemic.
Beating the virus involves restricting social lives as much as possible. Doing so in a responsible and committed way will limit the lifespan of this virus. And, in addition, it will cause less damage to society and the economy. We cannot allow contagions to spread, nor that this continues to cause closures of companies and shops, that continue to send our fellow Murcian to the unemployment line. And so, as I say, we must be forceful today. I assure you there is no other way.
We said from the first moment: that our hand would not shake in its efforts to protect the health of our people. Today I go further: we are not going to stop taking a single measure that guarantees that health and, therefore, allows the fight against the pandemic to be reduced in time. Because if it is hard to face mobility or meeting restrictions, it would be even more so if they had to be repeated cyclically or even increase.
Beating the virus is everyone's job more than ever. And what we have to do is very simple. We return to the initial message, which gave such a good results in the first wave: stay home, stay home. If you don't have to go out for something you need, stay home. Let us protect our own by waiting a little longer to meet with those who live elsewhere, in other homes. And when we have to go out, let's respect the sanitary regulations that will make us achieve a victory, that is in our hands to achieve.
