ARCHIVED - Murcia tourism authorities explore the possibility of Corvera-Iceland flights!
Talks with Icelandair were held at the World Travel Market event in London
The regional government of Murcia reports that during the World Travel Market event last week at the ExCel centre in London a total of 45 meetings were held as efforts continue to consolidate the popularity of the Costa Cálida mong holidaymakers from the UK, and that after talks with both Ryanair and Icelandair there is a possibility of direct flights being offered to and from Reykjavik at the Region of Murcia International Airport in Corvera in 2021.
In the case of Ryanair the conversations revolved largely around the flight schedules being planned for next summer, while the Icelandair representatives apparently expressed an interest in offering opportunities for Icelanders to visit the Costa Cálida. Of course, with a population of 360,000 Iceland is unlikely to become a major source of tourist activity in Murcia, but with the arrivals and departures boards at Corvera still dominated by UK flights, and with 42.2 per cent of all foreign visitors to the Region having come from the UK in the first 9 months of 2019, any diversification is inevitably to be welcomed.
At the same time, of course, the availability of flights to Iceland might provide an attractive way of escaping the summer heat for people living in the Costa Cálida!
Other successes include an agreement by which the tour operator Bohemia will be bringing 1,500 Bulgarian to the Costa Cálida in the spring and autumn of 2020, and another with the travel agency Guest Incoming which will mean 27,000 nights being spent in hotels in Murcia between April and October next year.
