Murcia confused with Rio de Janeiro in new Netflix squid game
The opening credits of the new reality show mistakenly show a Murcia landmark instead of Brazil
After the runaway success of the Korean series ‘Squid Game’ on Netflix, the ubiquitous streaming giant is capitalising by turning it into a reality TV show, ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’.
It basically consists of contestants competing in “high-stakes children’s games” for big cash prizes, and has much less blood and gore than the original series.
What has people in Spain talking, though, is that the opening credits for the programme show the international nature of the concept, flashing up scenes of New York, London, Sydney, Chicago and… Murcia?
Yes, a short clip from the credits – barely 3 seconds long – starts off the TV show with an image of the 14-metre-high statue of Christ in Murcia’s Monteagudo.

The most likely explanation is that the Murcia monument had been confused with the 38-metre Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Murcia’s current Monteagudo Christ statue, standing on top of a 12th-century castle on top of a mountain, was built in 1951 to replace the one that had been destroyed in the Spanish Civil War in 1936.
The area is also notable for the nearby ‘Castillejo’ fort, which was built by the so-called Wolf King in the 12th century and which is undergoing work to make it visitable right now.
Perhaps, then, given this important history and increased investment in promoting Monteagudo, the producers of the Squid Game show wanted to show it the area as being on a par with the great capitals of the world, putting Murcia firmly on the map!
