ARCHIVED - Murcia bushfires in Mazarron and Caravaca de la Cruz
The two fires were extinguished yesterday afternoon before they could spread
Firefighters in Murcia have had to extinguish two blazes in the last day. The first occurred in Mazarrón, on the RM-D6 road near the Bolnuevo roundabout, but thankfully the fire crew was on site quickly to put the fire out before it could spread early yesterday afternoon, Thursday June 9.
The second was in Caravaca de la Cruz, on a hill surrounded by farmland at kilometre 63 of the RM-714 road, burning through around 2,000 square metres of land before it could be snuffed out at around 9.49pm.
The news comes in the face of the first fierce summer heatwave to sweep through Spain this weekend, and a much more serious forest fire in Malaga which meant over 2,000 people had to evacuated from their homes.
These are unlikely to be the last wildfires to plague the Murcia Region this summer. Wildfires cause loss of life and natural protected land nearly every year in Spain, and authorities are reminding people to be sensible and not to throw cigarette butts on the floor or to have barbecues in dry forests.
