More Renfe train strikes called for this March in Spain

The Spanish Union of Railway Machinists (SEMAF) has announced that train drivers belonging to Renfe will strike for four days this March.

The new call for strikes comes after what they called an “unsuccessful” meeting with Renfe and the Ministries of Transport and Finance in Spain about hiring and working hours disputes, and follows on the heels of the strike that was called on February 9 by the union CCOO.

Three of the four strikes will last for 24 hours each, and take place on Friday March 1, Monday 4 and Tuesday 12. Meanwhile, on Wednesday March 6 there will be a strike by time slots: from 7am to 10am, from 1pm to 4pm and from 7pm to 10pm.

SEMAF says that the current situation is causing a “violation” of the rights of workers and railway users since the “lack of planning and interruption” of human resources processes are causing driver shortages, which leads to trains being delayed or cancelled. They have stated warn that if there is no solution as soon as possible, the situation “will get worse and the service will decline drastically for users”.

“At SEMAF we will continue working and fighting so that personnel processes are agile and orderly and the public rail transport service is dignified, efficient and effective,” the union points out.
