More rain before temperatures shoot up: Spain weather forecast August 15-18
The tail-end of the DANA will leave parts of Spain on red alert for storms but the weekend will be another scorcher
Weather alerts on Thursday August 15
An Isolated Depression at High Levels (DANA) has battered parts of Spain this week, resulting in downed trees, flooding, lightning strikes and even tornado-like funnel clouds. The front will continue to hit the Balearic Islands on Thursday, where a red warning has been activated but from here it should begin to weaken.
According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the DANA is expected to move away on Friday towards Corsica and anticyclone conditions will return, bringing a very sharp rise in temperature over the weekend.
Thursday August 15
The tail-end of the DANA will linger around the Mediterranean area on Thursday, leaving behind overcast skies and intense showers and storms. Torrential rain is forecast again in the Balearic Islands and on the coasts of Catalonia.
In the rest of the country, partly cloudy or clear skies are expected, with low clouds or morning fog in the far north, Teruel, Almería and Cádiz.
Maximum temperatures will tend to rise in the western and northern regions, and fall in the southeast and the archipelagos. Andalucía is back on yellow alert for temperatures ranging from 36-39ºC.
Friday August 16
The Balearic Islands will still see plenty of rain on Friday but the weather alert has been downgraded to yellow. As the DANA moves away, the weather will start to stabilise, and most of the country can look forward to clear skies.
Daytime temperatures will begin to climb across the board, but this rise will be sharper in northern Spain and in the Canary Islands. The mercury is predicted to exceed 35ºC in the interior of the southwest and 40ºC in the Guadalquivir.
Saturday August 17
The skies will continue to be a bit overcast in the Balearics, Galicia and Cantabria but it will be largely bright and sunny elsewhere.
The mercury will rise once again everywhere but the northwest, placing Andalucía and Extremadura on yellow alert for scorching temperatures.
Sunday August 18
No weather alerts have been issued by Aemet for Sunday, but even so temperatures are expected to exceed 35ºC on the southern Atlantic coast and in several parts of the southeast. Apart from a few extremes, most of Spain will hover somewhere in the mid-30s.
Stable weather will predominate, although the skies will be a little cloudier overall than on previous days.
