ARCHIVED - Media in a muddle over new Spanish lockdowns
Several media worldwide said that La Marina in Alicante province had been locked down, not A Marina in Galicia!
At the weekend two areas of Spain announced that they would be re-confining residents following outbreaks of covid.
It’s probably just co-incidence, but both of the regions which announced that outbreaks were forcing them to re-introduce mobility measures were those which had left the state of emergency early, exercising the right given by the Spanish central government to enforce measures at a local level once they entered phase 3. Galicia, in northern Spain was the first to go, claiming that its health service was well-equipped to cope with an outbreak, and Catalonia following rapidly behind; the day it was permitted to move into phase 3 after the situation in Barcelona improved sufficiently for the whole region to enter phase 3, it did so.
Both of these regions have regional governments with a strong separatist agenda, and are inevitably critical of any measures undertaken by the national government.
In Catalonia (Cataluña) 200,000 people will be confined within a geographical area and are not locked down in their homes as has been reported in some intl. media; there is a strong possibility however that the confinement will be intensified, and already the Spanish media is reporting the high probability that the confinement will last longer than 2 weeks.
The Generalitat has already admitted that it lied on Friday when it said it had no intention of locking down again and had been planning the lockdown for several days; its principal fear was a “starburst effect” should the public become aware that it was planning a lockdown. Giving just four hours notice was an attempt to prevent the public “running for the coast” and their holiday apartments, possibly spreading the outbreak further.
Anyway, most of the international media managed to correctly identify where Catalonia was and correctly display the map, although there was some confusion between case numbers and the numbers of people being confined in some quarters.
The two images shown here are taken from the Daily Mail in the UK and Belgian television.
The Mail corrected their webpage, but some social media users do have a habit of only reading the headline and not clicking to read the article, so there was some panic in Alicante as social media warriors leapt into action, informing their friends that they were being locked down at midnight.
Fortunately, some people do read articles and quelled the rising panic with the correct information!
