ARCHIVED - Mazarrón installs Punto Covid as cases rise to 65
The majority of cases are focused around agricultural company Susaña
Mazarrón council will be opening a dedicated “Covid point” in the Health Centre of Mazarrón town from 5pm Tuesday evening onwards, as part of measures to prevent the confinement of the municipality by tackling the outbreak related to the agricultural sector at a base level.
Mayor of Mazarrón, Gaspar Miras, explained that those affected are principally immigrants working in the agricultural processing plant, most of whom live together in the same areas, and in buildings principally occupied by families of the same racial background.
This type of accommodation is generally related to low-income families, from non-native backgrounds and is referred to as “pateras” accommodation as the families are often crammed together into small spaces, the type of close-contact conditions in which Covid thrives.
The council will be working closely with social services to support the families and ensure the message gets through that complying with the quarantine is compulsory.
The Mayor made the point that in cases such as this communication can be challenging, as many of the affected have yet to learn Spanish, and that the fear of losing their job or income was behind the decision of some workers to continue working even though they knew they had Covid symptoms.
Those who work in this sector are often the most socially disadvantaged and earn the lowest salaries, so for them, the loss of income caused by the need to quarantine or take time off work, was particularly difficult.
Many of the cases in this outbreak are asymptomatic, and are only coming to light due to the process of testing the close contacts and family members of the positive cases. All of these will be tested as part of the work to confine the outbreak and the Mayor explained that this would include the confinement of certain apartment buildings or areas in which the cases are concentrated to ensure that all those affected or potentially affected were quarantined.
The council is working with associations representing immigrants and local agricultural businesses, to ensure that workers are informed about the need to report symptoms and understand that they will be offered assistance through the quarantine process as part of measures to reduce the potential further spread of the virus in the sector.
Ten further cases have been diagnosed in the last 24 hours, bringing the total during the last ten days in the municipality, to 65.
The council is stressing that the outbreak is related to the Mazarrón town area and is not a risk factor for the tourist sector and in the port area. Cultural activities have resumed in the port as a result.
The Punto Covid in Mazarrón town will test all of those within the immediate area and contacts sphere of the positive cases and will be moved to different parts of the municipality should it become necessary to test in different areas.
The public is asked to only go to the Covid point if they have been contacted and asked to do so and anyone who believes they may be suffering from Covid should still call the central 900121212 number to report their symptoms.
