Mazarrón residents demand action over floating parties damaging the coast

Locals and environmental groups say a lack of surveillance is putting the protected Posidonia meadows at risk

What's normally one of the most peaceful spots on the Region of Murcia's coastline is now causing real concern among residents and conservationists. Around Isla de Adentro, opposite La Isla beach in Puerto de Mazarrón, dozens of boats gather in the bay during the day, with others taking their place at night, blasting music and shining powerful spotlights out across the water.

The Playa de la Isla Citizens' Assembly and Ecologists in Action are now calling for greater surveillance in the area, which falls within a protected Special Area of Conservation. Both groups say the lack of enforcement is allowing the problem to continue, affecting not just the marine environment but also the peace and safety of residents and holidaymakers.

One of their biggest concerns is the damage being done to Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows, a plant that plays a key role in coastal biodiversity and beach conservation. Campaigners say boats are still anchoring in sensitive areas despite their protected status, and point out that the damage caused by a single anchor can take decades to recover from.

Swimmers have also raised safety concerns, with jet skis reportedly speeding close to bathing areas, while residents describe the nightly gatherings as turning the island into what they call a floating disco, complete with loud music and spotlights lighting up the water for hours at a time.

Somewhat ironically, the complaints follow the recent approval of new national rules aimed at protecting seagrass meadows across the Spanish Mediterranean. While campaigners welcome the regulations, they say their success will depend on proper enforcement, including clearly marked protected zones and low-impact mooring systems.

They're now calling for an updated map of the Posidonia meadows, regular inspections to catch illegal anchoring, and stronger surveillance during peak tourist months, along with tighter checks on boat and jet ski rental companies.
