ARCHIVED - Man arrested after several nights of burning bins and cars in Murcia City
These rubbish bins cost around 1,000 euros each, without the cost of calling the fire brigade out
Murcia City Local Police have arrested a 28-year-old man for burning rubbish bins in the Patiño outlying district of Murcia City and the surrounding areas.
There had been fears that the spate of bin burning which has been taking place in the outlying districts of the city recently was attributable to young people protesting against the curfew, as there have a large number of incidents of burning bins in different areas of the country since the state of emergency was declared.
For several nights during the last week, firemen have been called out to incidents in the Murcia City municipality to deal with a quantity of burning bins, cars and on one occasion, the hedge of a residential property.
The man believed to be responsible for a number of these attacks was finally caught on Sunday at around 3:30 a.m., when a security guard called the 092 services, informing them that he had seen a man setting fire to a container on the Fuensanta highway, in front of the Carril de los Gallegos, at the entrance of Patiño.
Another burning bin was also reported in the Cebadero Lane of the same district, close to the first incident.
Several police units hurried to the area in which the man had been seen and began an intensive search for an individual matching the description given by the security guard, and finally located the man hiding in a field of canes between Carril López and Carril Gallegos.
During questioning, the individual concerned admitted to having carried out the arson attacks over a period of several nights, blaming alcohol problems for his behaviour.
Investigations are now underway to clarify how many of the recent attacks are attributable to this one individual, who will also be charged for offences related to breaking the curfew.
Firemen have also added their voices to those calling for the public to report anyone seen vandalising public property and setting fire to privately owned cars, reminding the public that acts of vandalism such as this end up being paid for by taxpayers; each bin costs the local council around 1,000 euros to buy, plus each call-out for vandalism requires the attendance of 6 firemen and 1 vehicle, tying up their resources in dealing with an act of vandalism, a situation which could prevent them reaching another fire in which human lives were at risk.
