Lynx mum nursing cubs killed by car in Andalucia
Animal groups in Huelva spent 3 days trying to locate the vulnerable cubs
A litter of orphaned lynx pups has been located after their mum was struck by a car and killed in the Andalucía province of Huelva a few days ago, presumably while out hunting for food for her young family.
The body of the mother lynx was found on Saturday June 29 on the A-49 motorway, near Villarrasa in Huelva.
At a time when environmental groups are pulling out all the stops to reintroduce these big cats into the Spanish countryside, even the loss of one is a huge blow, especially when the deceased animal was with her cubs.
It is only three days after the mother lynx was found that authorities managed to locate the cubs using a drone with thermal imaging. They have been tracked down to an area that has plenty of food for them and it is confirmed that they are in good health.

Following this latest tragedy, the environmentalists have once again called on the government to better safeguard these big cats, especially from traffic, which is encroaching more and more on their territory and hunting grounds.
“The Iberian lynx has been removed from the list of endangered species and moved into the vulnerable category, but if we do not correct the causes that brought it to the brink of extinction, we will return to square one,” Mr Romero stressed.
The proposed measures include the creation of ecological corridors and the elimination of black spots on roads.
“It is necessary to eliminate poaching to ensure the recovery of the Iberian lynx in its natural habitats. Although we have been successful in breeding in captivity, recovery in the wild is still a pending issue,” he added.
