Los Alcazares beach bars will remain open throughout Christmas

Spain recorded some of the highest December temperatures of all time earlier this week and the thermometers in several municipalities in the Region of Murcia approached 30ºC. And while the mercury will certainly begin to dip as we approach Christmas, the balmy Mediterranean climate and clear blue skies mean that tourists and locals alike will continue to flock to the coasts.

This is why Los Alcázares has decided to keep its beach bars, or chiringuitos, open all through winter, serving a range of delicious snacks and refreshing beverages.

So while most coastal areas dismantle their beach bars at the end of October, Los Alcázares is trying to break the seasonality cycle.

“Being a public service, we believe that it is necessary all year round on our beaches, and more than viable,” Tourism Councillor María José Aragón said this week.

The local government is planning to award a new four-year contract to a company to manage the chiringuitos year-round but the winning business will have to be chosen carefully to ensure it can cope with the workload, since tourist traffic typically triples during the summer months.

Going forward, the plan is to open the beach bars between the hours of 9am and 10pm during peak season, and at least between 10am and 6pm in the winter. Typically, low season runs from November 1 until April 30. There are obvious exceptions, Easter and Christmas for example, when the number of customers swells.

In contrast then, the high season runs from May 1 until October 31, during which time it will be mandatory for the chiringuitos to open every day.

On the other hand, the beach bars will only have to serve customers on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays in the winter months.
