ARCHIVED - LGTBi rainbow zebra crossings in Totana ruled legal by the Murcia courts
The gesture caused protests against “gender indoctrination” from far right-wing groups
When the Town Hall of Totana decided to paint zebra crossings in the colours of the rainbow as a gesture of support for the LGTBi community in 2018 the move sparked protests and objections on two fronts, with opponents of the initiative complaining of allegations of “gender indoctrination” on the one hand and a possible infringement of traffic laws on the other.
The La Falange group, usually associated with the ideology of General Franco, are consistently opposed to public gestures of this kind, and in Totana a banner was draped on railings near the crossings in and around Plaza de la Constitución reading “No a la imposición ideológica de género. Totana adoctrina” (No to the ideological imposition of gender. Totana indoctrinates). In response, the Town Hall commented that this kind of protest serves merely to underline how necessary it is to raise public awareness by gestures such as the one which is being made.
But La Falange also confirmed that they would be reporting the painting of the crossings to the courts on the grounds that road safety rules were being breached, the supposition being that zebra crossings must be black and white. Eventually the case was brought by the “Libertas sui Iuris” association, and now, almost 18 months later, it has been dismissed by the Provincial Court of Murcia, backing up a decision originally reached by the local courts of Totana.
Among the accusations rejected is that the then Mayor, Andrés García, had misused public funds, and his successor, Juan José Cánovas, declares that he is satisfied with this latest ruling as the rainbow crossings were “a merely symbolic gesture to raise awareness” of particular social groups.
