ARCHIVED - King of Spain in coronavirus quarantine
Felipe VI begins 10 days of self-isolation after coming into contact with an individual who later tested positive
The latest official data published by Spain’s Ministry of Health show that the incidence rate of Covid-19 appears to be falling at last as partial lockdown measures take effect in slowing the spread of the pandemic, but there are still thousands of new cases being diagnosed every day and one of the latest to be obliged to self-isolate is none other than King Felipe VI.
The monarch will be in quarantine for ten days as a precautionary measure after it emerged that he had been in close contact with an individual who has tested positive, although the Royal Household has not revealed the identity of the person in question. Felipe’s confinement began on Monday afternoon as soon as he was informed of the situation, and all engagements over the coming 10 days are therefore suspended although his wife, Queen Letizia, and his two daughters, Leonor and Sofía, will continue with their normal activities at least for the time being.
The King had planned to travel to Sevilla on Wednesday to open the Tourism Innovation Summit event but this trip was immediately cancelled after he completed his schedule for Monday morning.
Spain’s royal family are already familiar with the quarantine procedures: in April Queen Letizia spent 14 days in isolation after attending an official function in the company of Irene Montero, the Minister for Equality, who subsequently tested positive for coronavirus, and Princess Leonor also spent a fortnight in isolation in September after a positive test result was returned by one of her class companions at the Santa María de los Rosales school.
